Merry Monarch Butterfly Ranch

Butterflies have long symbolized major life changes and in some cultures are thought to bring conjugal bliss and joy. A butterfly release is a perfect way for you and your guests to celebrate your marriage. Merry Monarch butterflies are colorful, lively, and an environmentally friendly alternative to rice, birdseed, and balloons.

Each Merry Monarch butterfly is cared for by hand on our butterfly ranch so they will arrive at your event healthy and ready to celebrate. You may choose to have your butterflies arrive either individually enclosed in decorative boxes for each guest to release, or in parties of 6, 12, or 24 in a decorative box for a mass release.

About Us

We are a family-run butterfly ranch located in Kula, Maui, Hawaii on the slopes of Haleakala. Our interest in rearing butterflies began with a desire to have a home based business that would benefit our environment and add beauty to our lives and to the lives of those around us. In keeping with our basic philosophy to benefit the environment, Merry Monarch butterflies are not captured from the wild but are hand-reared on the ranch, throughout their development from egg to adult. In this way we can be sure that healthy butterflies are being released to join the local population in pollinating the many fruit and flowering plants of Hawaii.

Folklore

As we researched the biology and business aspects of butterfly ranching, we also discovered folklore from many different cultures that surrounds these enchanting creatures. Some beliefs about butterflies are that they carry messages from a soul directly to the gods, that they are signs of impending good fortune, and that they will bring conjugal bliss and joy. So... make a wish and send it heavenward on the wings of a butterfly!

A Dedication

Butterflies have long symbolized dramatic changes and joy. We named our ranch in honor of King David Kalakaua who was known as the Merrie Monarch of the Hawaiian islands. He loved to celebrate and inspired the rejuvenation of the Hawaiian culture which had been forced to go "underground" for several years. During his reign the hula and the Hawaiian language resurfaced and blossomed, much like the Monarch caterpillar which hides away from the world for a time before emerging as a beautiful butterfly.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide personal care for both our butterflies and our clients, and to bring these unique beings together in a colorful and joyous celebration of life's transformations.
